Neanderthals: Ape-men or Humans?

“Study says Neanderthals may have mated with humans.” —New York Times. 1

The big news is about Neanderthal DNA being sequenced. Neanderthals supposedly branched off the homo sapiens lineage about 600,000 years ago. They supposedly lived up until about 30,000 years ago.

History of Neanderthal Man

Let me give you a little history on Neanderthal man. The first Neanderthal was found in 1856 and was classified as 100% human. Since then, more than 300 Neanderthals have been discovered. In textbooks, Neanderthals are portrayed as ape-men, stooping over.  This misconception is largely the result of faulty reconstruction by a French paleontologist. He mistook the skeleton of a man with a hunchback for an ape-man in the process of becoming upright.

In Jack Cuozzo’s book, Buried Alive, the Neanderthal hoax is revealed as nothing more than a misunderstanding. While studying the fossils first hand, Dr. Cuozzo (a dentist by trade) noticed that the jaw placement was 1” out of place, making it look as though it had a protruding lower jaw and giving it “ape-like” features. When Dr. Cuozzo pointed this out to the curator he was promptly dismissed and asked not to return. You can see Dr. Cuozzo recount the story in the 2005 Creation Boot Camp held in Pensacola, FL.

Neanderthal Man is a Fraud

One embarrassing issue concerning Neanderthal man is, when it was discovered, a professor of anthropology had been “forging and manipulating scientific facts” concerning Neanderthals  “over the past 30 years.”  The February 19, 2005 edition of WorldNetDaily covered the story. Professor Protsch dated a female skeleton 21,300 years old, and another skull from Germany at 27,400 years old. The skeletons were later revealed to be 3,300 years old and 260 years old respectively. 2

Maybe Neanderthals are Humans?

The New York Times says Dr. Paabo’s obstacles include overcoming the fact that Neanderthal bones are “contaminated with modern human DNA.”  Should we ever stop and consider that maybe it is because they are humans?  Think about it: The brain capacity of a Neanderthal was 13% bigger than modern humans. The average height was 5’9”.  They had “advanced” stone tools, buried their dead, and enjoyed art.  Sounds like a normal human to me!

I thought the official family line was ‘Neanderthal was a very old frenchman’, apparently even the children. You are still playing that lecture aren’t you?

Science has always considered a relationship with Neanderthal, we just now have a better idea of how close. Evidence shows that there was some contact with Homo Sapien Sapien as they moved out of Africa.

Only use WND as a source if your only point in this articles is to get back slaps from fellow creationist rather than trying to reach out and convince others.

    You Neanderthal!
Calling somebody a Neanderthal is no longer just a hypothetical insult. Evidently our ancestors interbred with Neanderthals, or maybe put the other way, our ancestors interbred with Homo sapiens sapiens. But now that we know that 1-4% of SOME people’s, but not everybody’s come from the Neanderthal, won’t it become politically incorrect to disparage beetle browed cognitively challenged ice age hunter?

The Neanderthals were sorely oppressed by Homo sapiens sapiens (HSS), who evidently were not very inclusive of the Neanderthal. It was unlikely that good looking HSS men dated the stocky, troll-like Neanderthal girls, although some of them may have taken advantage of them sexually.

And why do the HSS think they are so smart anyway? Neanderthals did okay through the tough times of the ice age and as soon as the weather improves here come the HSS, with their fancy flakes spear points and articulate grunting (i.e. actual complex language). Maybe Neanderthals should have been more careful in protecting their southern border.

Trolls & ogres look suspiciously like Neanderthals. Isn’t it likely that they are based on Neanderthal racial stereotypes? Or maybe the Neanderthals were forced to live under bridges and that is how they got to be “trolls”. And what about those people who say “don’t feed the trolls?” Aren’t they really saying, “starve the Neanderthals?” Aren’t the dim-witted but dangerous bad guys in “The 13th Warrior” Neanderthals? In fact, it is hard to think of any common positive media portrayals of Neanderthals.

I am assuming that I have some of those Neanderthal genes. That probably explains why I have not been as successful as I think I should have been. And I am wondering if I should get some kind of restitution or affirmative action as a result of the ancient oppression. In the entire history of the world, not one openly Neanderthal individual has ever been a president, king or even a successful lawyer. Is that mere coincidence? Generations of science books have shown a “progression” of humans from the “lowest” to the “highest”. Neanderthals never get to be on top, despite the fact that Neanderthals had a larger average cranial capacity than modern humans. And what’s up with the German name “Neanderthal?” Neanderthals lived in the Neander valley long before Germans were invented.

The mainstream society has changed its view of Neanderthals but not enough. We should spare no expense to find out what the Neanderthals called themselves, so that we can show them the respect of calling them by that name. After eons of oppression, do they deserve anything less?

Sounds like a normal human to me!

Cherry picking data to make them sound more like a HSS, is that intentional deception or an honest mistake?

    They had “advanced” stone tools

Yet, Homo Sapiens at the same time had far more advanced tools. Neanderthals had stabbing spears that were very simple to make. Yes, they are considered advanced but were far behind what Cro Mags were making at the same time.

    buried their dead

Haphazardly it seems. We do not find graveyards or any kind of mass grave for them. Now for Homo Sapiens, we have found graveyards. Cro Mags seemed to have taken more care of their dead.

The big difference is in bone structure. Neanderthals had bones that were far denser than Cro Mags or even ourselves. They were also more barrel chested with shorter arms and legs. There was also a bony protrusion found around the nose not found in any Homo Sapien. They had long collarbones and wider shoulders than we do. Short bowed shoulder blades and larger kneecaps. These are averages of the fossils we have found compared to the modern average of all humans.

Oh and once again, as Eric already is well aware. Humans are Apes.

    It’s our biological classification.

This classification comes from a devout Christian Creationist from the 1700s, 100 years before Darwin published Origin.

So Ape-men is just a silly term because we are bothl Ape-men.

    Except the women.

    To Rocky, to Nigel:

…For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not in wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made void. For the word of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the discernment of the discerning will I bring to nought. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe. Seeing that Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek after wisdom: but we preach Christ crucified, unto Jews a stumblingblock, and unto Gentiles foolishness; but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For behold your calling, brethren, that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong; and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, yea and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: that no flesh should glory before God. (1 Cor. 1:17-29)

1901 American Standard Version, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1994.

All truth seems foolish to those who are “wise”. We argue from our positions of weaknesses or strengths, each seeking to be the voice heard over the clamor, yet persuading no one. Do I pretend to know about the fossil records? No. Neither can you, for what you base your “facts” upon are theories, nothing more, “educated guesses”. No, I have nothing concrete either, just a book filled with what I believe are the Words of Almighty God, and if that makes me foolish, so be it. You accuse creationists of cherry picking, but the same can be said of evolutionists, so whose arguments are right? At least I’ll take a stand and say mine are religion – can’t you at least admit the same, that evolution is your religion also? Then we can have a discussion, for then we know what well we each draw from. Is science wrong? No, not completely… Is creationism wrong? No, not completely… But only one is true. Impassioned men and women in both camps have made assumptions, declarations, forged theories and hypotheses that border on the brilliant to the ludicrous, yet only one thing stands clear in the smoke of the battle; for a definite answer to all our questions, we have none. Faith: it holds together the evolutionists claims, his faith that science triumphs. Faith: the factor that holds together the creationist, the faith in an Intelligent Design, hence a Creator. The question then isn’t where did Neanderthals come from, for that cannot be answered by either camp; what has to be asked is if there a Designer, then what does He want from me? Rocky, you are an intelligent person, Nigel, so are you. If we have no Creator, then nothing is lost, except the brain cells that sacrifice themselves to our intellectual and spiritual pursuits. If we have a Creator then, the task becomes more daunting, for it calls for a change of heart, a dropping of the pretenses that we are able to define our way through this mess called life, that we can find answers in nature. They are there, that is true, but all of creation reflects its Creator, and validates His story, but then, you have to have faith to believe that; just like it takes faith to believe I came from a rock bathed in primordial soup. The exercises of the mind are fun, challenging and creative (hmmmmmm); but at what cost if we are risking our eternal soul to deny the existence of God? That is the real debate, foolish versus wise. The wise lay their bets on the side of a Creator, and go from there; the foolish say there is no God, and only emptiness can follow, for nothing can be proven… Neanderthals? God knows…..

You are making some assumptions about things you don’t know or can know. I suggest you try reading Ken Miller’s book “Finding Darwin’s God”.

I hate evolution with all my soul. Satan made evilution to turn men from God.
