How To Pray
What Is Prayer?
You were created by God, who designed you for a relationship with Him. Prayer is how you connect with the One who made you—it’s a conversation between you and God. It’s not about perfect words or religious rituals; it’s about honestly sharing your heart, your struggles, your questions, and your gratitude. Through prayer, you draw closer to the God who knows you completely and loves you deeply.
Who are we Praying To?
When you pray, you’re talking to the God of the Bible—the Creator of the universe and the source of all life. He’s not distant or uninterested. He’s loving, personal, and desires a relationship with you. Even though sin separates us from God, through Jesus Christ, we can come to Him freely, knowing He hears us and responds with wisdom, grace, and love. Prayer is your direct line to the One who created you and longs for you to know Him.
8 Kinds of Prayers
Adoration (Praise)
Worshiping God for who He is—His attributes, power, and majesty.
Example: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)
Confession (Of Sin)
Admitting sins and asking for forgiveness, acknowledging our need for God’s mercy.
Example: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
Thanksgiving
Expressing gratitude for God’s blessings, provision, and faithfulness.
Example: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Supplication (Petition)
Asking God for personal needs, guidance, strength, or help in specific situations.
Example: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
Intercession
Praying on behalf of others—for their needs, healing, salvation, or spiritual growth.
Example: “I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.” (1 Timothy 2:1)
Dedication (Consecration)
Committing oneself to God’s will and purposes, surrendering completely to Him.
Example: “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
Lamentation
Pouring out grief, sorrow, or distress to God, often seeking comfort or understanding.
Example: “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)
Meditation (Contemplative)
Quietly reflecting on God’s Word, listening for His voice, and seeking deeper intimacy.
Example: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Your Most Important Prayer!
The most important prayer you will ever pray is the prayer to begin a relationship with God—the Prayer requesting Salvation. You were created by God to know Him and live in fellowship with Him. But your sin separates you from God, leaving you to bear the weight of God’s wrath. The good news is that God loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price for your sins through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.
When you repent of sin, and put your trust in what Jesus has done for you, God promises that you will be forgiven, saved, and brought into a personal relationship with Himself. This prayer isn’t about perfect words—it’s about your heart sincerely turning to God.
A Prayer of Repentence!
“God, I know that I was created by You, but I’ve lived my life separated from You because of my sin. I admit that I’ve done wrong and need Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again to give me new life. Right now, I turn from my sin and ask You to save me. Jesus, come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. I trust in You alone for my salvation. Thank You for loving me, forgiving me, and giving me eternal life. Help me to follow You from this day forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
