Calling All Men: The Return of Courageous Christianity
We just had a powerful and deeply moving conversation with American historians William and Michael Federer from American Minute about Courageous Christianity, the kind of faith that doesn’t hide when culture crumbles but stands up, speaks out, and changes history.
They told the story of a young London lawyer named George Williams, a man who saw the spiritual emptiness in the streets of industrial England. Men were working themselves to death, families were torn apart, morality was decaying, and he couldn’t stay silent. He gathered a few men together to pray, study the Word, and live boldly for Christ. From that small gathering, the YMCA was born in 1844. What started as a handful of faithful men became a worldwide movement that transformed millions.
The ripple effects were astounding. Out of the YMCA’s discipleship model rose men like D.L. Moody, who went from selling shoes to preaching to thousands, sparking revivals across America and Europe. The YMCA also birthed James Naismith, a believer who wanted to create a wholesome, godly activity for young men, so he nailed up two peach baskets and invented basketball. Not to entertain, but to train the body and the soul.
Then there was William Morgan, another YMCA leader who thought basketball was too rough for some of his students. He strung up a net and created volleyball, a game that soon spread around the globe. Even Teddy Roosevelt was impacted by YMCA leaders who instilled in him the discipline and spiritual grit that shaped his character and presidency.
The YMCA’s influence even reached into unexpected places. Before the Civil War, it brought black and white men together in fellowship and worship, a quiet act of courage that defied the racial barriers of the time. And believe it or not, even Father’s Day traces its roots back to a YMCA effort to honor godly fatherhood and rebuild the strength of the home.
The Federers reminded us that when men return to God’s call, entire nations are revived. That same spirit of courage is needed today because our culture is doing everything it can to tear down biblical manhood. Families are wandering without direction. Young men are being told to be passive, silent, and ashamed of who God made them to be. But history shows that when even one man says “yes” to God’s call, everything changes.
We see it happening again in our generation. Look at Charlie Kirk, one young man who refused to stay silent, and now over 60,000 requests have poured in for Turning Point USA chapters. One act of courage can multiply a thousandfold when it’s done for God’s glory.
This is our time to rise. Get involved in your community. Speak truth in your schools. Start or support a TPUSA chapter. Don’t let the world define manhood; let the Word of God do it. Because silence in times like these is consent.
We will not consent.
We will not bow.
We will rise.
We will speak.
We will answer the call of Courageous Christianity.
Episode #445: “Courageous Christianity”
This isn’t just another history lesson … it’s a rally cry. Eric Hovind, with American historians William and Michael Federer, uncover how one man’s obedience to God sparked a movement that reshaped culture — the YMCA. What began with a young lawyer’s prayer in London ignited revivals for Christ, birthed men like D.L. Moody, and even inspired the creation of basketball, volleyball, and the Red Cross.
From the prayer meetings of 1844 to the battlefields of World War II, this episode tells the story of men who lived their faith with grit and conviction; men who built hospitals, led nations, and stood for truth when the world mocked it.
If you’re tired of seeing manhood torn down and faith silenced, this conversation will stir your heart. It is one you do not want to miss. It’s time to remember that courage isn’t born from comfort — it’s born from conviction.
