The Adam Question: Was Adam a Historical Man or a Myth?
Was the first man a knuckle-dragging ape without a loin cloth—or a fully formed, hand-crafted human molded from dust by divine hands? That was the driving question behind our recent Creation Today show interview with Dr. Marcus Ross, Ph.D. in geoscience, where we tackled the controversial topic: The Adam Question: Mythology or Mankind?
Dr. Ross stands firmly on the biblical record: He declares that Genesis is definitely telling us about an original couple—and this is the Truth. While prominent voices like William Lane Craig argue that Genesis is “mytho-history,” Dr. Ross made it clear that Adam was not a poetic placeholder, not a campfire tale, and not a symbolic stand-in. He was a real, historical man—directly connected to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Stakes: Adam and the Gospel
Dr. Ross highlighted that the Bible itself makes Adam’s existence non-negotiable. Paul, in Romans 5:12, declares: “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” And in 1 Corinthians 15:22: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
If Adam never existed, Paul’s argument about Christ’s victory over sin totally collapses like a deck of cards. The New Testament’s most extensive discussion of Adam in Romans, ties him inseparably to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Adam’s first sin was real—so Christ’s redemption of sin for mankind is also real.
Dr. Ross pointed out that Paul mentions Abraham as a real historical man, not a figurative symbol. Why would he then treat Adam differently? The repetition specificity in Paul’s letters emphasizes that Adam cannot be read as myth.
Competing Views
In the book Perspectives on the Historical Adam and Eve: Four Views, scholars present their positions:
- Kenton Sparks (Errant View): Rejects inerrancy, treating Genesis as spiritually helpful but historically unreliable.
- William Lane Craig (Reinterpretation / Revisionist View): Argues Genesis is mostly mythology with some historical value, speculating Adam may have lived 700,000 years ago.
- Andrew Loke: (Reinterpretation / Revisionist View) Suggests a “genealogical Adam,” a distant ancestor within an evolutionary framework.
- Dr. Marcus Ross (Inerrant View): Defends the historical, literal Adam as Scripture presents him.
Dr. Ross stressed that the push to reinterpret Adam always comes from trying to reconcile Scripture with evolutionary theory. Without that pressure, no one would naturally read Genesis this way.
Does Science and Human Origins Disprove Adam’s Existence?
What about science? Dr. Ross reminded us that real science doesn’t contradict the Bible—it confirms it. The various “human-like” fossils—Homo erectus, Homo ergaster, Neanderthals, and others—do not prove human evolution. In fact, skulls of Homo erectus found in Georgia show wide variation within the group, yet still closer similarities than the differences between modern humans and Neanderthals. It is important to remember that variation within a species does not equal molecules-to-man evolution. Dr. Ross emphasized that these groups were fully human, post-Flood, and post-Babel—different tribes within humanity, not pre-human ancestors.
Ultimately, the fossils affirm what Scripture has always said: humanity began with one real man—Adam—not a population of pre-human creatures. The story of Eden is not myth or allegory, but the true foundation for understanding who we are and why Christ came.

Why It Matters
In the late 20th century, many theologians made a “gentlemen’s agreement” to accept an old earth while still affirming Adam’s reality, recognizing how central he is to the gospel. But as evolutionary thought crept further into the church, doubt spread among Christians about what parts of Scripture they could trust. Dr. Ross argued this uncertainty has left many believers unsure of their faith’s foundation.
Yet the message is clear: Adam was not mythology. He was mankind—the first man, through whom sin entered the world, and whose story connects directly to the cross and the empty tomb. If Adam was real, then Jesus’ work is real. If Adam was a myth, then the gospel itself unravels.
Dr. Ross, a scientific rebel against the mainstream evolutionary narrative, concluded: Science, Scripture, and history all affirm the truth of Genesis.
The Bottom Line:
The Adam question is not just academic—it is foundational to the gospel. As Paul taught, the reality of Christ’s resurrection is inseparably tied to the reality of Adam’s sin. Deny Adam, and you undermine the cross.
