One Nation Under God: 250 Years of Providential History

As America prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, it’s the perfect time to look back and ask an important question: Was America’s founding simply a remarkable chain of historical events, or can we see the providential hand of God guiding the course of history?

Recently, on the Creation Today Show, Eric Hovind was joined by Dr. John Reese, professor of history at Pensacola Christian College, for a fascinating discussion about America’s providential history. The conversation was filled with remarkable accounts that many Americans have never heard, reminding us that history is far more than names, dates, and battles. When viewed through the lens of Scripture, history becomes the story of a sovereign God working through ordinary people and extraordinary circumstances to accomplish His purposes.

For generations, historians openly recognized that God was actively involved in the affairs of men and nations. Today, that way of thinking has largely disappeared. Modern history tends to explain everything through politics, economics, military strategy, or coincidence while dismissing the possibility that God was directing events all along. As Dr. Reese explained, many historians no longer even consider God’s involvement a legitimate way to understand history. Yet Scripture repeatedly teaches that God raises up kingdoms, removes rulers, and directs the course of history according to His will.

The examples shared during the show were incredible.

One of the most fascinating was the story of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Spain wasn’t simply sending ships to conquer England. On board were priests, friars, and even instruments of torture intended to force England back under Roman Catholic rule. Had that invasion succeeded, history may have unfolded very differently. Instead, powerful storms devastated much of the fleet. Even King Philip II of Spain reportedly admitted, “I sent my ships to fight against men, not against the winds and waves of God.” Looking back, it’s hard not to see God’s providence preserving Protestant England at a critical moment in history.

Another unforgettable account was the life of Captain John Smith. Long before helping establish Jamestown, Smith survived one impossible situation after another. At one point, while crossing the Mediterranean, fellow passengers discovered he was a Protestant and threw him overboard during a storm. Amazingly, he survived and reached a nearby island. During the discussion, Eric jokingly said that whenever someone says “Lady Luck,” we ought to replace it with “the grace of God.” That lighthearted moment captured the entire theme of the episode. Was it really luck, or was God preserving one man for a purpose far greater than he could have imagined?

Those are just two of the many remarkable stories discussed during the program. Dr. Reese also explored the Pilgrims, Jamestown, the role of prayer in America’s founding, the Great Awakening, the Declaration of Independence, and countless other examples that point to God’s providential hand throughout our nation’s history. There simply isn’t room to include them all here.

The conversation also examined one of the most important principles upon which America was built: our rights come from God, not government. The Declaration of Independence boldly declares that we are “endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” That wasn’t empty political language. It reflected the conviction that our liberties originate with God Himself. Government doesn’t create our rights. Its responsibility is to protect the rights our Creator has already given us.

One of the highlights of the discussion came near the end. We don’t study history because the Founders were perfect. They weren’t. We study history because understanding where we’ve come from helps us understand where we need to go. As Dr. Reese reminded us, if you’re discouraged by the direction of our nation, don’t simply curse the darkness. Light a candle. Teach the next generation. Pass on the truth. Preserve the heritage we’ve been entrusted with.

If you haven’t watched this episode yet, we highly encourage you to do so. This article only scratches the surface. We simply couldn’t fit all of the fascinating stories, historical details, and biblical insights into one article. We think you’ll come away with a greater appreciation for America’s history, a deeper understanding of God’s providence, and a renewed gratitude for the blessings He has poured out on our nation.
