Same Initials. Different Mission. Why It’s Time to Rethink Which CT You Support

This past Easter, Christianity Today published an article suggesting that Jesus may not have been nailed to the cross after all. Yes, during the very week Christians around the world celebrate the victorious death, burial, and Resurrection of Christ, Christianity Today chose to cast doubt on the biblical account of the crucifixion.

After significant backlash, the author issued an apology and updated the article. But for many believers, it was too little, too late. The damage had already been done.

And let’s be honest: This wasn’t a one-time mistake. It’s part of a much bigger pattern.

Which leads us to something very important:

Just because our ministry, Creation Today, shares the same initials as Christianity Today (CT), we do not share their woke, liberal views.

Creation Today is not the same as the organization known as Christianity Today. Not even close. While Christianity Today has drifted into progressive theology and cultural compromise, Creation Today remains boldly committed to the authority of Scripture, the truth of the Gospel, and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

How Christianity Today Started — and Where It Went Wrong

In 1956, around 2 a.m., Billy Graham rushed to his desk and began writing ideas that he believed came directly from the Holy Spirit.

The vision? A new magazine. A “flag to follow” for believers seeking to restore intellectual respectability and spiritual impact to evangelical Christianity. That magazine became Christianity Today.

In its very first issue (October 15, 1956), Christianity Today boldly declared: “Theological liberalism has failed to meet the moral and spiritual needs of the people.”

They proclaimed that only a return to true, biblical preaching, grounded in the authority of the Bible, could offer real hope to a lost world.

At its founding, Christianity Today was a beacon of biblical truth. But slowly, almost imperceptibly, things began to change. Through the decades, subtle compromises crept in. By the early 2000s, Christianity Today was increasingly publishing articles that prioritized social trends over scriptural truth, exploring “nuanced” positions on sexuality, social justice, gender roles, and even biblical inerrancy. The real turning point for many came in December 2019, when Christianity Today published an editorial calling for the removal of President Donald Trump, framing it as a matter of “faith.”

Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, responded with a heavy heart, writing: “Christianity Today has changed, and it’s obvious that they have moved to the left and are representing the elitist liberal wing of evangelicalism…”

What was once a clarion call against theological liberalism was now embracing the very ideas it once warned against. And sadly, it hasn’t stopped there.

Christianity Today Is a Mirror of a Bigger Problem

Christianity Today isn’t just a magazine that has drifted. It’s a mirror of what’s happened across the modern Church.

What we see in its pages reflects a broader crisis:

  • A generation of Christian institutions reinterpreting the truths of Genesis
  • Mixing God’s Word with cultural lies
  • And slowly abandoning the foundation of biblical authority

What started as a “small” compromise has become a full-blown pattern of theological erosion. Christianity Today simply offers a public example of what is happening throughout the Church today.

CT vs. CT — A Tale of Two Ministries

Tragically, over time, the majority of organizations and institutions that began totally sold-out to the Bible as their only foundation, standard, and mission stray from that commencement. Creation Today desires to never take that path.

Pray for Creation Today to continue to:

– Believe the Bible is true from the very first verse.
– Proclaim the Gospel with clarity and conviction.
– Equip Christians to stand strong in a rapidly compromising culture.
